The Sturgeon City Science Explorers is one part of the
Sturgeon City Science Series. Funded by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund and operated by the City of Jacksonville through the Jacksonville-Onslow Volunteer Center, the program is open to sixth and seventh grade students in the Onslow and Department of Defense schools.
Students need to have a desire to learn about the scientific method, advance their understanding of research, be willing to get dirty and wet while experiencing some of the same activities real scientists do and come with an open mind for environmental awareness in their own community.
So are you interested in Science Explorers?? Here is some more information about the program that might help:
- Targeted at 7th and 8th graders.

- Our goal to ignite further science appreciation and develop knowledge and use of the scientific process (inquiry).

- The Program emphasizes student research and directed investigative process.
- Field work includes sampling, field book record keeping, journaling, observations and other documentation methods.

- Lab work includes charting, development of theories and presentation skills.
- Presented during five Saturdays. Fifth Saturday is a 'road trip' to see working scientists.
- Two 'five week sessions' with students invited to each 'road trip' in order to continue appreciation in project.
